West of Panamint Range, that rises on the west side of Death Valley, across a couple of minor ranges further west, Owens Valley was once a very fertile region centering around Owens Lake. The lake has been since sucked dry by the City of Angeles, but the reason for all this water remains. The mighty Sierra Nevada rises abruptly to the west.
