Hessie Trailhead is a convenient place to start a hike if you live in Boulder.
It starts west of Nederland just past
the town of Eldora, some 30 miles from Boulder. Our December trip was
somewhat of a family trip,
an outing with a bunch of colleagues and graduate students to get some fresh
air. As is often the case with trips like that, one does not have enough time
for photography, is not in the right place at the right time, and does
not even go far enough, but it is fun anyway.
In winter, Forest Lakes can be reached most easily from Moffat Tunnel,
a railroad tunnel under the Continental Divide. My daypack felt very
light on this first trip to the mountains after my trip to Patagonia...
