It was tough to say good bye to the desert but Irina had a plane to catch the following morning. We covered the 500km+ drive back from Douz to Tunis in one day, and made a few short stops long the way, the longest of which in the Medina of the city of Sfax.
After leaving Douz early in the morning, we made a quick stop when we spotted camels right next to the road. This was also another place we played the game of pushing the big SUV to get it to start again. It never got old, and somehow I felt I was earning the trip that way. After the desert stop, we continued to an oasis town of Al-Hammah (El Hamma) where we briefly explored a local market.
It was a long drive to Sfax and I got hungry. After a roadside stop to get Libyan gasoline again, we pulled over by a roadside grill to have some authentic lamb whose preparation we got to see pretty much start to finish except for the actual slaughter of the animal.
Tunisia's second city, as Sfax is sometimes called, was the last stop of our road trip. We only had enough time to walk around the medina quarter a bit. Like the medina in Tunis, it was a busy place full of interesting sights. After that it was just a long drive back to Tunis, where Mohammed dropped us off in front of our hotel.
