Heavenly closes today (April 5), and even Palisades announced it would close in April instead of the planned Memorial Day weekend in late May. How did we get here? We did get a few rainstorms in the fall which were too warm to build a base, then it stayed warm and dry for weeks in early December. I scheduled our ski trip for early January as a result, while praying for snow to come. A monster snowstorm dumped feet and feet over Christmas building an almost 40 inch base at Kirkwood.

At the top of the Wall in a whiteout

When we finally hit the slopes on New Year’s, we got more new snow but not having skied in fresh snow often, it was a welcome change.

Philip going down the Wall in a whiteout

January flew by without much or any precipitation, and after another period of drought, a monster snow storm arrived in the second half of February dumping up to 8 feet of snow. It also claimed an unprecedented number of lives around Tahoe in avalanches and ski accidents. Its impact on snow bases was moderated by an unseasonably warm storm that followed and brought rain up to 10,000 feet in elevation.

The moisture spigot turned off for all of March again. Heading into our spring break ski trip, temperatures everywhere in the West were pushing record highs, hitting close to 90 in the Bay Area.

Our ski trip on the tail end of this historic and record shattering heat wave featured more warm temperatures, extensive closures and low snow conditions at Heavenly, but still a perfect coverage at Kirkwood. The Sentinel run, a groomed black diamond trail, was a pure joy to cruise. Views were still there, the sun, warmth, and the spring skiing worked out a lot better than I had thought before the trip.

Matthew and Lake Tahoe

I still plan to make a spring skiing weekend trip to Mammoth Mountain. Mammoth Mountain sits higher than Tahoe resorts. Its Man Lodge at 9,000 in elevation is above where most of them top out, and its summit elevation of 11,000+ feet often makes it possible to ski well into the summer.

The Tahoe region was by no means alone in having a low snow season. Resort all around the West including Utah and Colorado reported record low snow conditions throughout the season and are having record early closings. In some sense, Tahoe was a place to be for a good part of the season.

Is this a sign of things to come with global warming or just an aberration after good seasons of recent years?
